A patient with neck mass and fever
Kim Sun-Hyun

Abstract
Kikuchi¡¯s disease is a rare, benign condition of unknown cause usually characterized by cervical lymphadenopathy and fever. The initial description of illness was in young women. It Also referred to as Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease or Kikuchi¡¯s histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, histopathology of involved lymph nodes differentiates Kikuchi¡¯s disease from several more serious conditions, which it may mimic. The most common clinical presentation is fever and cervical lymphadenopathy, fever is a primary symptom in 30-50 % of patients. It is typically low grade and persists for about one week, though rarely for up to one month. systemic symptoms like night sweats, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea may appear to be more prominent in patients with extranodal involvement. The diagnosis of kikuchi¡¯s disease is made by lymph node biopsy. Biopsy should be performed, despite the self-limited nature of this syndrome, in order to exclude more serious conditions requiring aggressive therapy such as lymphoma. No effective treatment has been established for patients with kikuchi¡¯s disease. Signs and symptoms usually resolve within one to hour months. However, patents with severe or persisting symptoms have been treated with corticosteroids with apparent benefit.
